2013 Round Up
October and November saw the LDA night transform into a drawing night proper, giving organiser Sarah Howell an end of year rest.
The biggest benefit of the drawing nights was the opportunity to chat about future event ideas.
2013:
19 speakers, and our first full year of programming!
Also we successfully pitched an event to the Melbourne Writers' Festival, Draw Like A Girl. This panel event saw Jo Waite, Katie Parrish and Lucy Knisley (US) talk about what they drew as children and how their art and interests have developed.
Another highlight was the last minute addition of Irish comic creator Cliodhna Lyons to the June event. Cliodhna is still touring the world and meeting other comic folk, follow her progress here: http://ztoical.livejournal.com/
2014:
LDA nights will recommence in February. Also based on the numerous discussions at LDA about watercolour technique we are planning a watercolour workshop.
Enjoy the summer break, keep drawing, and we will see you in the New Year!

Changed Date!
September LDA will now be held on WEDNESDAY 25TH instead of Thursday 26th September.
The reason is because LDA alumni Mandy Ord will be launching her new book NY at Readings, 6.30pm that on the Thursday. More details of Mandy's event here: http://www.readings.com.au/event/finlay-lloyd-smalls-launch
So go to Ladies' Drawing Auxiliary on Wednesday and then Mandy's launch on Thursday!

September
August was a bold experiment.
I programmed a phone/skype interview as one of the spots. I like the idea, it broadens my pool of potential guests, but a physical guest tends to drag other people with them for moral support, guaranteeing us an audience, even on a dark and rainy Melbourne night.
Sooo...Georgia and Alexis will now speak at the September event and will be joined by Adele Walsh and Jordi Kerr from the Centre for Youth Literature.
Adele and Jordi will be giving us the low down on comics and graphic novels in the youth literature publishing scene. The Centre for Youth Literature are on the frontline when it comes to convincing teachers and librarians that comics have a place in literary criticism, discussion and education. What are they finding out?

Ele Jenkins |
Erin and Ele gave great talks.
Erin gave us an insight into her work as an illustrator and the rumblings of ideas for a comic based on her humorous, cutely gross characters.
Ele gave an overview of her last two years slogging away at an epic fantasy graphic novel Soddenheim with her writing collaborator Andrew Milne. From world building to teaching herself digital colouring she has been on a steep learning curve. We look forward to seeing more of Soddenheim as it develops.

Cliodhna Lyons (aka Ztoical) drops by on her world tour! |
Enormous line up for June 2013 LDA.
Squishface founding member, Marta Tesoro, talked illustration and animation freelancing.
Scarlette and Marijka talked about the inspiring/intimidating experience that was Caravan of Comics 2013.
Finally we had a surprise last minute guest speaker, Cliodhna Lyons, an Irish comic creator on a world tour to meet other cartoonists. If you (or a cartoonist you know) lives anywhere between Melbourne and Eastern Europe drop her a line to organise a meet up. As of writing she is due to turn up somewhere around Hong Kong and the Philippines soon.
It was an interesting evening that delved into the struggles of comic communities around the world. Also the nature of conventions.

Rebecca Clements |
We promised you Rebecca for October last year, but circumstances were against us. Now she is returning. She has a swag of comics under her belt from recent months of toil after her year sabbatical of not making comics. Why did she stop making comics, and why has she started again? We will find out!
Also we are very excited to announce the following presenters for the coming months.
March: Melanie Matthews and Sarah Firth
April: Susan Butcher and Carol Wood (Pox Magazine) and Marijka Gooding
