August 2014 - Wikipedia working bee

On the wikipedia List of Australian Comic Creators there are people who don't have a wikipedia page who deserve one.

Let's change that, starting with the lady comikers.

You don't know how to edit a wikipedia page? Neither do I! But I'll find out how and we can work on it together at the next LDA night 7pm Thursday 28th August.

We'll have wifi and snacks. Bring your wifi enabled device to get typing on.

Can't make it on the night, but would like to contribute? Let us know and we can send you a name or topic to research and edit.

This event is inspired by the Women in Science Wiki-Edit-A-thon.

2014

It has been quiet with the posting here over the last six months.

Over those six months I (Sarah Howell) ran a comics festival and also received a fellowship to work on my graphic novel. Which meant that while Ladies' Drawing Auxiliary has still been happening I have been struggling to find the energy to document, update and promoting the goings on.

This time-poorness continues, so I'm going to call in some favors and we'll see how the event takes shape.

2013 Round Up

October and November saw the LDA night transform into a drawing night proper, giving organiser Sarah Howell an end of year rest.

The biggest benefit of the drawing nights was the opportunity to chat about future event ideas.

2013:
19 speakers, and our first full year of programming!

Also we successfully pitched an event to the Melbourne Writers' Festival, Draw Like A Girl. This panel event saw Jo Waite, Katie Parrish and Lucy Knisley (US) talk about what they drew as children and how their art and interests have developed.

Another highlight was the last minute addition of Irish comic creator Cliodhna Lyons to the June event. Cliodhna is still touring the world and meeting other comic folk, follow her progress here: http://ztoical.livejournal.com/

2014:
LDA nights will recommence in February. Also based on the numerous discussions at LDA about watercolour technique we are planning a watercolour workshop.

Enjoy the summer break, keep drawing, and we will see you in the New Year!

Changed Date!

September LDA will now be held on WEDNESDAY 25TH instead of Thursday 26th September.

The reason is because LDA alumni Mandy Ord will be launching her new book NY at Readings, 6.30pm that on the Thursday. More details of Mandy's event here: http://www.readings.com.au/event/finlay-lloyd-smalls-launch

So go to Ladies' Drawing Auxiliary on Wednesday and then Mandy's launch on Thursday!

September

August was a bold experiment.

I programmed a phone/skype interview as one of the spots. I like the idea, it broadens my pool of potential guests, but a physical guest tends to drag other people with them for moral support, guaranteeing us an audience, even on a dark and rainy Melbourne night.

Sooo...Georgia and Alexis will now speak at the September event and will be joined by Adele Walsh and Jordi Kerr from the Centre for Youth Literature.

Adele and Jordi will be giving us the low down on comics and graphic novels in the youth literature publishing scene. The Centre for Youth Literature are on the frontline when it comes to convincing teachers and librarians that comics have a place in literary criticism, discussion and education. What are they finding out?
